On the planet Eternia, the dark lord Skeletor has taken over Castle Greyskull, and imprisoned the Sorceress, and Skeletor has begun draining the Sorceress' powers as he attempts to claim the powers of Greyskull and become master of the universe. Mighty warrior He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe and his companions: loyal soldier Man-at-Arms, his daughter Teela and a dwarf inventor named Gwildor finds themselves on Earth, by Gwildor's creation, the Cosmic Key, a device that can open portals that lead to anywhere in the galaxy, which Skeletor requires in his goal for universal conquest. But when the Cosmic Key is discovered by Julie Winston and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan, both unaware that Earth is about to become a battleground, as Skeletor and his vile minions arrives on Earth, as they go in pursuit of He-Man and his companions who are searching for the Cosmic Key so they can return to Eternia and defeat Skeletor.
On the planet Eternia, Skeletor and his dark army overthrow the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull expecting to acquire her power. He-Man, his old friend Duncan "Man-at-Arms" and his daughter Teela are attacked by Skeletor's soldiers and they defeat them. They also rescue their prisoner, the inventor and locksmith Gwildor. He explains that he was lured by Evil-Lyn that used his invention the Cosmic Key to open the gates and seize the Castle Grayskull. He-Man and his friends retrieve the prototype of the Cosmic Key trying to release the Sorcereress but they are defeated by Skeletor and his army and Gwildor uses his key to open and portal for them to flee. They come to Earth but lose the key. Meanwhile, Julie Winston, who grieves the loss of her parents in a plane crash, and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan find and activate the key, believing it is a foreign musical instrument. On Eternia, Evil-Lyn locates the Cosmic Key and Skeletor sends her with a group of mercenaries and soldiers to vanquish He-Han and his friends and bring the key back. Will they succeed?
This piece is so very derivative. <br/><br/>1. The titles - Go back 10 years and look at the original Superman titles. They zoom in with tracers. <br/><br/>2. The opening music - Again, the same movie. Listen to the Superman music and then listen to this opening music. <br/><br/>3. Other places within - Riding little saucer shaped scooters. This has been done. Check out Back to the Future. <br/><br/>4. Costuming - it has all been done before. Even the old time serials had face masks like Skeletor. Storm Troopers, anyone??? <br/><br/>Yes, there is some original stuff, too, but, goodness, so much imitation. Oh, well, it was lit well and the sound was recorded well but that&#39;s some of the best of it. Otherwise, much chest beating and shooting and jumping and running around.<br/><br/>I did finish it. That says something positive about it and that&#39;s how it got to 5 stars.
May Contain Spoilers: This is one of the worse adaptations of a cartoon series by a movie I have ever seen. Hollywood has been known for dropping the ball, when it comes to making movies based on cartoons, comic books, and video games. They seem to always screw up. And this is proof right here. I was a fan of He-Man and She-Ra back in the eighties, and when I heard that there was a movie out that was based on He-Man I was thrilled. When I finally saw the movie, I was highly upset. First of all, Why did they set most of the movie on earth? What about GRAYSKULL dammit! Second, why was Skeletor only in the movie for the first 5 minutes and the last 15 minutes? Third, what did those lame teenage characters have to do with the story?<br/><br/>Another complaint is that there wasn&#39;t really any sword fighting in the movie. The only sword fighting that took place was between Skeletor and He-man, and that was poorly choreographed. The best part of the movie is the first five minutes. The rest goes down hill. This movie isn&#39;t good enough to watch even when there&#39;s nothing on T.V. In addition, the characters could of been developed a little bit more. The special effects could of been better too. My other big complaint is Dolph Lungren. He looks the part, but he can&#39;t act worth a sh**. He spends most of his time smiling and looking cute in the camera. Hard-rock pecks can only get you so far. When Lungren tries to show some depth, it&#39;s just pathetic. Sure, he looks the part but he needs to stick to roles where he hardly speaks and/or just pouts in the camera (Rocky IV and Universal Soldier). Marc Singer, of Beastmaster fame, would have been better for the part. Since, he can act and had a wash board stomach at the time. Yes…his hair is brown but it could of been dyed. Frank Langella was okay as Skeletor for the short time he was in the movie. But he kind of hammed it up. All of the hamm in the world can&#39;t save a DOO-DOO script, and this movie has a doo-doo script. Courtney Cox is probably shaking her head in shame at this one. Thank God…they didn&#39;t make a movie to the SHE-RA series. Godzilla (1998)was better than this trash. The movie isn&#39;t even bad/entertaining (Kull the Conqueror).<br/><br/>I give this movie a 2/10, and that&#39;s for the first 5 minutes and the brief scenes with Skeletor.
Everyone knows how the battles will turn out. It's what's between them that raises Masters Of The Universe ever so slightly above the mediocre.
Masters of the Universe is based on a popular cartoon called &quot;He-Man and The Masters of the Universe&quot;, the cartoon, itself is based on a toy franchise created by Mattel. Pig Boy was played by Richard Szyponder. Richard Szyponder was given a small part in the film. After winning a competition, where Richard got to visit the set and meet the cast and director. The executives at Mattel wanted director Gary Goddard to give Richard a part in the film and Richard was put in makeup and custome, as a servant of Skeletor, Pig Boy and is seen handing Skeletor his staff, when returning from Earth with the subdued He-Man. We see the bottomless pit beneath the throne room, which is filled with red water, which Skeletor fell into, in the climatic final battle with He-Man. Skeletor surfaces and says &quot;I&#39;ll be back!&quot; which ends in a freeze frame and fades to black. The extra scene was supposed to set the stage for the sequel &quot;Masters of the Universe 2&quot;, but since the film didn&#39;t do very well at the Box Office, the sequel was dropped. The script for &quot;Masters of the Universe 2&quot; had been written, but was rewritten and became the script for the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film Cyborg. You are right, in the cartoon, He-Man never killed anyone, which was a &quot;No!&quot; for a cartoon aimed at children. But Masters of the Universe which was darker than the cartoon, which the film is based on, was an action movie and Skeletor&#39;s crack troops, which were written as robot warriors, were created for He-Man to smash, fight and kill and Skeletor&#39;s crack troops are the only people He-Man and his companions kill throughout the movie. It&#39;s assumed they were killed by Skeletor, when Skeletor used the cosmic key to enter the city and break into Castle Grayskull. Gwildor had a secret passage in his home, which led to caverns beneath Castle Grayskull. Frank Langella was offered the role of Skeletor and Frank Langella decided to take the role of Skeletor, because he wanted to do it for his son Alex, whom was a fan of He-Man and Langella had felt Skeletor was a role he couldn&#39;t refuse. Frank Langella admitted in an interview that Skeletor was his favorite role.
